Brad Downey’s oeuvre focuses on the immediate; by placing everyday objects in a new or unexpected context, he plays with the idea of normalcy and forces the viewer to examine their surroundings more closely. In his work, Beginning and the End (2010), Downey uses commonplace materials, preinstalled pavers, to challenge a space’s purpose, and calls into question the perceived invulnerability of something we often take for granted—the very ground we walk on.
