Redirecting Traffic by Heidi Nagtegaal (2010) was performed during the height of public traffic during the Vancouver Olympic Games. She posed as a traffic cop and made her own crocheted pylons. She redirected many cars, an Olympic van, an ambulance without sirens, etc. until undercover cops stepped in and made her stop.
Her performance was meant to be an assertion of authority within a place where suddenly the Olympic games ruled all, and made daily life for actual residents hellish. She wanted to challenge the notion of tourism by detouring without actually providing information on how to get back. It’s also been read as a “reclamation of public space in moment that lacked privacy and boasted heightened security.”
