In 2009, artist William Powhida created this illustration in response to the New Museum’s questionable curatorial ties. The image, which includes caricatures of several figures tied to the questionable 2010 exhibition, “Skin Fruit: Selections from the Dakis Joannou Collection” critiques the museum’s ethical stance in the art community (as Joannou is a member of the New Museum’s Board of Trustees). Powhida’s illustration was praised by some for emphasizing the conflicts of interest in the art world; as American art critic Jerry Saltz writes, “This single drawing changed art-world minds, including mine. His spring solo at Schroeder Romero & Shredder was also one of the trickiest and most satirically cutting shows of the season, including portraits of art stars and players taken from the gossip site”
