In 2012, artist Olafur Eliasson and Frederik Ottesen started a global project, Little Sun, that sought to create a small, portable solar lamp for people without electricity in Ethiopia. This project responded to the need to create energy in third world countries who don’t have the resources to maintain constant sources of electricity and light. Little Sun not only provides a light source for families in Ethiopia, but is also sold in first world countries, where the proceeds go towards paying Ethiopian entrepreneurs to sell Little Sun at an affordable rate to other Ethiopians.

Conceptually, the lamp connects people through the power of light. The practicality of the product provides a solution to a global problem but also provides the foundations for countries to establish more long-term solutions to accessing and maintaining renewable resources.
